New Theory: Compromise creates harmony

The theory is simple and not as 'new', however, it is a strong, rigid concept that drives Architecture. People, landscape, building all are trying to fit in one space. Clashes between them give a sense of conflict, hence, problem starts and , if not solved, deteriorates. Compromise is important to avoid clashes and, ideally, creates a sense of balance. Nevertheless, deep consideration is required to construct a harmonious scene in Architecture: elements as individual or as group, internally or externally, static or moving. The following section will analyse how the building demonstrates the concept in detail and give a tour from draft design to final model.

Architectural folly


From the perspective drawing, the following combination of prisms is chosen.

The folly is developed for hosting a monthly "Dean's Lunch". A podium is made for the representative to greet and give speeches at lunch.


Plan - Draft design

The design is inspired by Zaha Hadid's Riverside museum as well as the gymnastics act and the model. This act on the Pommel Horse effectively shows the balance between the support and the inner structure. So as the airplane model.


The initial plan and section is first designed. The landscape chosen is a valley with low-height hills and lands and surrounded  by water. My idea was to make the building 'fly and span out'.  Taken the idea of Riverhouse museum, by altering the orientation of one opening, a V-shaped plan is designed. With the design on section, the draft model is then later developed and done in SketchUp.

Final model

From the draft model, it can be seen that the building has different levels. All rooms are rearranged within the building and the building is set in the traditional way: one entire big block with levels and rooms inside. In this design, the space arrangement is restraint. Unlike the building made from combining blocks, the space constraint require a thoughtful rearrangement to fit, and be able to distinguish, each and every room of the space requirement. The concept of balance and harmonisation of elements within one structure internally is demonstrated in this space/room planning. (Difference in plan in room space arrangement can be seen in SketchUp using Outliner function)

Workshop
Studio Space

Students designs works, discuss ideas and translate the concepts of Architecture onto paper or computer in Studio space. Whilst, workshop is a place for them to make their ideas into physical model. The combination of the workshop and studio space in the same level space is well considered so that it becomes convenient for students to travel between these two spaces.

Gallery
Skyline is put in the Gallery to allow natural brightness from the environment shine in the interior of the building. This makes an indirect interaction between the building and the environment.

Library

The spiral elevating staircase allows the staffs and the student to travel between the school and the folly. The elevating staircase wraps around the elevator and spirals upwards. This allows another way to travel between the levels. The long tube shaft of the elevator perfectly 'wrapped' by the spiral staircase gives another demonstration for the concept of compromise. The balance of this element not only enhance the convenience for the staff and students, but it is also visually appealing.
